{"id":85,"date":"2013-12-18T23:26:29","date_gmt":"2013-12-18T23:26:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.communityanimalhosp.com\/blog\/?p=85"},"modified":"2022-06-20T14:03:31","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T14:03:31","slug":"prescription-diets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.communityanimalhosp.com\/blog\/prescription-diets\/","title":{"rendered":"Prescription Diets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-89\" src=\"https:\/\/www.communityanimalhosp.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/download.jpg\" alt=\"Rx Diets\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dogs and Cats are put on\u00a0 <strong>Prescription Diets<\/strong> as a therapeutic way to manage or cure an illness.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Good nutrition is a big part of keeping your pet healthy.\u00a0 This means finding a well balanced diet that your pet both likes and is good for him; one that has a good combination of ingredients and is not limited to any one type.\u00a0 Feeding your pet a limited diet like this may actually be harmful.\u00a0 Grain for example is not harmful, it is actually beneficial to their nutritional balance.\u00a0 However, at sometime in your pet&#8217;s life he may need to be put on a special diet due to an allergy, illness, or age related symptom. When this happens your veterinarian may prescribe a special diet.<\/p>\n<p>These special diets are pet foods available only from your veterinarian and can be a valuable tool in the management of many canine and feline diseases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prescription\u00a0Diets<\/strong> can be used alone or in conjunction with medications to manage or cure many disorders.\u00a0Each specific prescription diet is designed for a specific disease.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these Rx diets are used short term to handle acute diseases and sometimes they are used lifelong to manage symptoms and prevent progression or recurrence of disease.<\/p>\n<p>For example,\u00a0 <strong>Hill&#8217;s Prescription Diet <\/strong><em>I\/D<\/em>\u00a0 (Intestinal Diet) is used short term because your dog or cat has to be on a bland diet.\u00a0 Others diets such as\u00a0 <strong>Hill&#8217;s<\/strong> <em>C\/D (Crystal Diet), <\/em>\u00a0and <strong>Royal Canine\u00a0<\/strong><em>SO (Struvite Oxalate) <\/em>are used for urinary tract disorders, and <strong>Hill&#8217;s<\/strong> <em>Y\/D<\/em>\u00a0used for thyroid problems in cats, are lifelong prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Like any prescription, these foods cannot be substituted by over the counter &#8220;medications&#8221;.\u00a0 Be wary of off-the-shelf pet foods claiming to give the same results.\u00a0 As with any diet the more cheating you do, the worse it can be for your pet. Always talk to your veterinarian before giving any other food or treat if they are on a prescription diet.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful of marketing ploys that push the latest fad.\u00a0 Boutique pet food companies may tout grain free, gluten free or raw.\u00a0 Raw diets however,\u00a0 may be harmful (as they\u00a0can carry\u00a0salmonella, potentially harmful to humans).\u00a0 Before changing your
